Mastering (or pre-mastering as
it is technically refered to) is an audio process enabling
a fresh set of ears to check how the project flows, discuss
and arrange track order, track fading, carefully listen
to and adjust equalization, compression, and volumes,
and finally compile a master CD that is then tested for
low error counts.
Sessions are usually done in 4-5
hour blocks and can extend to a second session if required.
This way listening fatigue is kept to a minimum.
Mastering sessions
can also be performed remotely via mail, email, and FTP.
A CD or DVD of mixed-down tracks can be sent for mastering
with detailed instructions as to how it should be handled.
In order to speed up the process, a high-quality MP3 (though
it will not be the full-fidelity of the final CD!) can
be assembled and uploaded allowing the client to listen
for fades, track order, and general audio for further
evaluation and approval prior to burning the master CD
and sending it back to the client. This can save days
of waiting time for mail to go back and forth.
Mastering equipment includes gear
from Steinberg Audio, Sonalksis, PSP Audioware, Lucid,
B&W, Rotel, Canare, with upgrades being added when
possible.
Other audio services can include:
audio editing
cassette, vinyl, and DAT transfers
to CD, MP3
high-quality MP3 conversion
